Private property is widely treated as a natural, inevitable feature of social organisation — yet this assumption obscures far more of human history than it reveals. This lecture examines private property as a social institution rather than a given, tracing how alternative systems have organised society across time and place. It considers pre-colonial India's extensive regimes of communal property, and how British colonial rule distorted and displaced them. It also examines the Soviet Union's opposite extreme, where the state's confiscation of even basic personal possessions functioned as a tool of political repression. Finally, it argues that the Western conception of private property remains inseparably entangled with histories of conquest and slavery.
